I saw it in dramas, and didn’t believe it (because TV, right?), but the theme of “choosing work over marriage” kept on cropping up, and then I studied “how to do business in Japan if you’re a woman” and was all, “holy shit this is a real thing”

the salary thing is DEFINITELY a sound theory—women in Japan who are still in the workforce past the age of 30 are viewed as having had a sex change by their male peers (so the stereotype goes)
