I have two forms of dysautonomia, one called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and the other, chronic orthostatic hypotension (OH). I suffer from many invisible yet debilitating symptoms, such as low blood volume, chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, severe fatigue, and it also causes me to have near-fainting episodes (hypoxic spells) that look like seizures D: I was first misdiagnosed with depression, and then chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I’ve seen numerous doctors over the past 27 years before I found out about dysautonomia three years ago and stated the process of getting a diagnosis. But even with a diagnosis in hand, at present there aren’t many really helpful treatments, so I suffer from crushing fatigue and end up spending many days a month in bed. I rarely leave my house because I do not have the energy to walk much and I’m afraid to even consider getting a wheelchair because I’m afraid that people will not understand my invisible illness and will treat me badly for it. Please help spread awareness so I and all of the other people suffering from dysautonomia can gain some attention from researchers and understanding from society.

I thought my life would finally be better when I was diagnosed instead it got worse. I have yet to find a doctor properly educated in dysautonomia, many doctors still treat me as if I am a hypochondriac or as if it is anxiety. The treatments have not worked and I am searching for doctors to try other treatments. My own family even treats me as if I am a hypochondriac or even faking for attention. The only support I have is from my online friends who also suffer from POTS and other forms of dysautonomia. I have meant countless other people who have similar stories as I do because people and doctors are not aware of dysautonomia and how we suffer silently. I spend many days in bed, and my others in emergency rooms and doctors offices, I am waiting to go to Mayo Clinic but that may take as much as a year. I am 19 and rarely leave my house because I do not have the energy to walk and afraid to use my wheelchair because people do not understand my invisible illness and treat me badly for it. Please help spread awareness so me and all of the other people suffering can gain some understanding.

We in the U.S.A. should all be fully aware of the 2012 NDAA Section 10-21, and we should be speaking out in support of the team of citizens suing the Obama administration over this section of this law in Hedges v. Obama, which has recently been heard by the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals. According to Wikipedia:
“ A federal court in New York has issued a permanent injunction blocking the indefinite detention powers of the NDAA but the injunction was stayed by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals pending appeal by the Obama Administration. ”

This is website is called Dysautonomia International and it is an organization that helps raise awareness and education about the condition Dysautonomia and how we can all come together to try and find better treatment and supports for those who lives with it themselves or have loved ones who battle it. Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for multiple conditions that effect the body due to an abnormality in the autonomic nervous system. It can be acute to severe and can include daily symptoms such as fainting, tachycardia, mental processing difficulties, excessive fatigue, seizures and even stroke and in some cases can be fatal. I am personally effected by a form of this condition known as Generalized Autonomic Dysfuntion/Generalized Dysautonomia (GD). It depends on the day how I feel, but I will have this condition the rest of my life.
So, you now know ONE person with the condition… But, there are so many more people out there who aren’t aware and struggling with medical mysteries when this might be it. Please, it takes two minutes. Hope that you help me and all the rest of us who support this cause find ways to make life a bit more manageable with this condition.

Wow. I can’t begin to describe how surreal it is to know that there are people going around with tattoos of me in one of my least worthy — though certainly most famous — incarnations. I could maybe see admiring me in my last few incarnations, where I actually did some *good* in the world — I was a historian of religion in one, and a folk singer and ethnomusicologist of sorts in another — but even in those incarnations, I seriously doubt I’d merit having my face tattooed on anyone’s arm, lol!

As citizens of the world and Internet users, we call on you to reject any changes to current Internet regulations that would weaken or alter the free and open nature of the Internet, or give any government or body the ability to infringe on Internet users’ rights to free speech, free access to information or privacy. We also demand that any proposed changes to current international Internet regulations be publicly debated, and subject to citizen input and approval.
Right now at a UN meeting in Dubai, authoritarian regimes are pushing for full governmental control of the Internet in a binding global treaty — if they succeed, the internet could become less open, more costly and much slower. We have only 2 days to stop them.
The Internet has been an amazing example of people power — allowing us to connect, speak out and pressure leaders like never before. That’s largely because it’s been governed to date by users and non-profits and not governments. But now countries like Russia, China and United Arab Emirates are trying to rewrite a major telecom treaty called the ITR to bring the Internet under its control — the web would then be shaped by government interests and not by us, the users. Tim Berners Lee, one of the “fathers of the Internet,” has warned that this could increase censorship online and invade our privacy. But if we object with a massive people-powered petition, we can strengthen the hand of countries fighting this power grab.
We have stopped attacks like this before and can do it again before the treaty text is locked this week. A wave of opposition to a new ITR is already building — sign the petition to tell governments hands off our Internet! and then share this campaign with everyone you know — when we hit 1 million signers, it’ll be delivered straight to the delegates at this cozy meeting.

Mallory Owens is a lesbian from Alabama who was almost beaten to death on Thanksgiving in what is clearly a hate crime. Please sign this petition and pass it along. It explains why when I stand up, I feel like I’m on a really high ledge instead of in my body. And why my body feels too much, and too big, and out of control.
Any time I’m not communicating bodily (either talking or being in the presence of another person because then my body is communicating something too) that’s the only time internal self is allowed to really exist. It’s why I take walks. And type a lot.
It’s why I refer to myself automatically in my head as Toranse but the very second I get around someone, I instantly give and respond to my birth name, no hesitation. External self takes over right at that moment.
In some ways, I can relate to this, though in my case it’s not a dissociative thing so much as a trans* thing. There’s the real me — which I can only realize when I’m alone and meditating and able to tune in to the deeper reality of me. And then there’s the fake me, that other people think I am, especially when in person, since, like you said, my body communicates this other “identity” that isn’t really me, but exists in the minds of other people. It’s frustrating to know that almost no one ever sees the real me, and that’s never going to change. :(

I went as me for Halloween
I know, not very original, either way you look at it: going as yourself is considered lazy, and going as Dracula (well, really Drăculea) is passé, even if that *is* yourself. But my dysautonomia reared it’s ugly head this past week and I just didn’t have the energy to deal with Halloween this year, which is a shame, since I love dressing up as a pirate or a mad scientist. *sigh* There’s always next year, I guess.
