In case you haven’t heard, Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced on Tuesday that they’re pulling funds for breast cancer-screening from Planned Parenthood. This issue is important to me because not only did both my grandmothers have breast cancer and my mom have a benign tumor in her 30s, but both my caregivers have had breast cancer scares. Fortunately, my caregivers both turned out to be okay, but they are still at higher risk because they have first-degree relatives who have had breast cancer.
The reason why this issue is so concerning to me is that, while my relatives all have had enough money to take care of their needs, my caregivers don’t have those kinds of resources. Before yesterday, Susan G. Komen funded free or low-cost breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood for people like my caregivers who don’t earn much and therefore either don’t have insurance, or don’t earn enough to pay all the co-pays for all the testing that needs to happen after you’ve found a lump or had a troubling mammogram.
So, please sign this petition and pass it along. Also, if you’ve ever given your time or money to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, please consider telling them you’re not giving them another cent because you’ve decided to give money to Planned Parenthood, and/or to other breast cancer organizations instead: Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Breast Cancer Charities of America, CancerCare, or Cancer Research Institute.
