I guess I am incredibly lucky (I live in a big city) but I’ve never felt persecuted for being an atheist. Even people who want to proselytize to me will usually just mutter something dismissive (“God bless you!”) and walk away when I tell them. It can be irritating, but I’ve never felt unsafe or even particularly silenced as an atheist.
So it’s really eye-opening to read how transgressive atheism is considered in other parts of my country, and the bigotry other atheists deal with.
This article is disturbing. It astonishes me how poorly thought of Atheists are in some parts of the U.S.
I’m not an Atheist myself, but my sister is, and, given what was said in this article, I am grateful that she lives in Seattle, where she doesn’t have to hide her beliefs.
